Creative people have always been looked down on by society as if we are unicorns and dragons. In some ways, perhaps, we are these imaginary beings, because we think outside the box and challenge norms and look at the world in unique ways.
Most people think we should just be like them, and don’t always understand why creative people don’t want to follow the cookie cutter mold – of working 9-5, 5 days a week, and two weeks vacation! – and that we crave to set our own terms and live freely as creative as we are.
Creative people typically break the mold, because we dream and want to bring our dream worlds into reality and we actively set out to do that through our work, whether it’s write a book or screenplay, playing and creating music, painting, designing, using these talents we have to create a more exciting and magic world where we pave the way for others in hopes of inspiring them to join in the journey.
Society has evolved to a creatively oppressive place, by normalizing being chained to a desk 8 hours or more a day or punching a clock. One vacation a year. Very little free time. Hours driving to and from a job. Creatives work tirelessly to break that suppressive system to create a more liberating life where our work creates joy, inspiration and opportunity, where time is fluid, and our passions and joys become life. The average person doesn’t always see a writer as a normal person, they see them as weird for wanting to write a book and create worlds for others to escape into. Or an artist just draws for fun. It’s not a real job. It’s just a hobby! Or an avid film-lover is dreaming too big imagining the world will watch their movie on the big screen one day! Or this kid who creates beats on pots and pans imagining themselves as musicians treated as a nuisance.
Creative people have been given a bad wrap because our passions to create aren’t taken seriously and treated as though they are just dreams and ‘won’t pay the bills’ or ‘that’s a hobby, not a ‘career’, when it could be the most meaningful job there is!
People were born to create! In some way these interests that are deemed as ‘hobbies’ are really our inner child wanting to express the magic we see and want to share with others.
People don’t want to accept the abnormal is normal in a way to live away from that free and a fulfilling life. Having a creative life is just as much a career as any other job; you are just free, not punching in a clock everyday. If the world saw creative people as normal people not the “weird ones” The world could be a better place.
A message to all those creators out there: embrace your passions and unique gifts because the world needs more of us now more than ever!
